GIN! GIN! GIN! GIN! GIN! Who doesn’t love Gin?!

Gin over the past 5 years has absolutely blossomed in the bar industry, every other order is either a Gin & Tonic or a Gin based cocktail. But where did Gin come from? How is it made? This post is going to take a brief history tour on Gin and how it is made, we will also suggest a couple of Gin based cocktails that will surely get your taste buds tingling for more.

Gin is the native drink from the Netherlands, being distilled in factories all over Holland but how did it get to England? This happened in the 1700’s when England had its first ever foreign king, King William the 3rd, who decided to bring his native drink to the country that he would be ruling, this then started the gin craze in England. Because there were no laws on alcohol in the 1700’s people took it upon themselves to brew and distill gin in their own front rooms, this was extremely dangerous as they did not know what they were doing people would literally blow themselves up, or if they were successful they would make a super strong base spirit - which would usually be super deadly, this was the first time in English history that the death rate was higher than the birth rate. Now that the brief history lesson is over … LETS GET TO THE GOOD BIT!!

We are going to give you two simple recipes for some gin based cocktails that are very simple to make at home, and they are:

White Lady

37.5ml Gin

12.5ml Cointreau

25ml Lemon Juice

1 Egg White

With this cocktail you will need to dry shake first with a spring, and then a full wet shake with ice and serve into a coupe or martini glass with a lemon peel garnish.

Tom Collins

50ml Gin

25ml Simple Sugar Syrup

25ml Lemon Juice

top with soda water

With this cocktail you will need to add everything except the soda water to a glass and mix with a spoon and ice to help with dilution, when finished add more ice and top with soda water.
